Did you know that once a mosquito mates, it can lay 100 eggs every three days for the rest of its lifespan? These very fertile creatures are a nuisance on a level that rivals few other creatures. Here are a few things to know as mosquito season gets underway:
1. Mosquitoes can lay eggs in any still, fresh water: This can be anything from a pond to a river to the little bit of water collected in a tire behind the garage. Even your birdbath.
2. Mosquitoes can live for up to a year: These creatures may be abundant, but they can also be long-lived.
3. Mosquitoes can carry disease: There are a number of life-threatening diseases, from malaria to West Nile, that are transmitted by mosquitoes.
4. Mosquitoes are picky about who they bite: It’s true that some people get bitten more often than others. Studies have shown that they prefer sweaty people over clean ones, men over women, adults over children, and thinner people.
5. Treating once won’t do the trick: Mosquitoes can lay eggs over and over again throughout the spring, summer, and fall. Each egg takes about 48 hours to hatch, goes through four molts in the larval aquatic stage, and then goes into a two-day pupa to become an adult. This process continues for two to three seasons of the year.
