Many birds in their natural wooded habitat are cavity and tree dwellers. This means that they look for crooks of branches or holes in which to build nests. A home can look very similar to this, and because of that, there are a lot of different places where they may try to inhabit, depending on the features and layout of your home. Here are some of the places to watch:

• Eaves: Open, uncapped eaves offer great nesting opportunities.
• Rafters: Any exposed crossbeams that a bird can get to the top off is a potential nest site.
• Soffits: If your soffits are not sealed well, they can be pried and birds can get inside to build a nest.
• Gaps: If your house isn’t quite correctly lines up, birds are happy to take residence where things don’t meet flush.
• Chimneys: Ornate chimney caps may entice some birds to come inside and make a home, especially if you rarely use the fireplace.
• Bathroom Vents: As this is another hole into the home, it’s a great place for birds to enter.
• Front Porches: This is another very common location to find birds.
• Outbuildings: The less you use a building or room, the more likely that wildlife may try and take up residence.Open loft rafters in barns and storage sheds are one particularly popular area.
